The Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company, a subsidiary of reinsurance giant Munich Re, is to become a contributor member of the LoRa Alliance.

The Hartford Steam BoilerThe LoRa Alliance is a non-profit association dedicated to the standardisation of low power wide area networks (LPWAN); a technology that enables long-range, wireless connectivity between IoT devices.

This follows HSB’s announcement in July revealing a new generation of its Sensor Systems solution; delivered as a kit for commercial customers, the sensors use proprietary algorithms to help prevent loss and improve performance.

It’s hoped that LoRa, a specific wide area network (WAN) technology widely popular in Europe, will enable devices to effectively collect and send data without the need for 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi and support the development of new IoT applications.

As a contributor member of the alliance, HSB will join over 500 companies hoping to encourage the adoption of LoRa technology and, more specifically, drive forward the use and popularity of LoRaWan as a standardised network for such devices.

“LoRaWAN’s long range, high interoperability, and low power requirements enable us to create tailored applications for a variety of commercial and industrial environments,” said Lewis Wight, Chief Technology Officer for HSB Meshify.

“Our membership in the LoRa Alliance™ allows us to collaborate and share experiences with other technology companies leading the IoT revolution.”
